We are interested in understanding why cancers originate and develop, mainly in the context of Latin America, and in identifying potential ways of targeting them. To do our work, we perform large-scale analysis of whole genomes, exomes, transcriptomes and proteomes from Mexican and Latin American cancer patients.

We are interested in understanding why cancers originate and develop, mainly in the context of Latin America, and in identifying potential ways of targeting them. To do our work, we focus on the analysis of large-scale genomic data, including whole genomes, exomes, transcriptomes and proteomes, from types of cancer that are relevant in Mexico and Latin America. At the moment, we focus on acral melanoma, the most common type of melanoma in Mexico, and in liver disease and cancer, which are rising in most of the world. We conduct most of our research collaboratively, with both local and international hospitals and research institutions, and lead both dry- and wet-lab focused approaches. We receive or have received generous funding from SECIHTI (Mexican government), DGAPA (UNAM), the Wellcome Trust, the Melanoma Research Alliance, the Academy of Medical Sciences of the UK, the Forbeck Research Foundation and the Wellcome Sanger Institute, among others.
