Dr. Gonzaga-Jauregui is the Principal Investigator of the Mendelian Genomics & Precision Health Laboratory and Assistant Professor at the International Laboratory for Human Genome Research (LIIGH) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Her research focuses on family-based analyses of rare and common genetic disorders to identify pathogenic variation and novel genes associated with disease to better understand the molecular architectures and pathophysiology of genetic disorders. La Dra. Claudia Gonzaga Jáuregui es la investigadora titular del Laboratorio de Genómica Mendeliana y Salud de Precisión del Laboratorio Internacional de Investigación sobre el Genoma Humano (LIIGH) en el Campus Juriquilla de la UNAM. La Dra. Gonzaga Jáuregui ha sido pionera en la implementación y análisis de abordajes genómicos para el estudio de enfermedades genéticas, mediante los cuales ha identificado y publicado más de 20 genes asociados a enfermedades raras no identificadas previamente. Luis Gerardo Fernández Luna (Undergraduate student. Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas, ENES Juriquilla, UNAM)
Luis has finished his studies in the Undergraduate Program on Genomic Sciences at ENES Juriquilla, UNAM and is currently working in finalizing his thesis. The main reason he enrolled in the lab is because he wants to study how changes in coding regions of the genome can contribute to disease and how the application of genomic technologies such as next generation sequencing can help find a gene related to a disease which can be studied for developing a treatment. Luis was born in Uruapan, Michoacán and he likes practicing sports such as squash, mountain biking, volleyball and calisthenics in his free time.
Luis ha terminado sus estudios dentro de la Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas (LCG) en la ENES Juriquilla de la UNAM y actualmente se encuentra trabajando en terminar su tésis. Le interesa la genómica humana, puesto que le intriga conocer cómo cambios en regiones codificantes del genoma pueden contribuir en el desarrollo de una enfermedad y cómo mediante la aplicación de tecnologías genómicas como la secuenciación se puede encontrar un gen relacionado con una enfermedad y, a su vez, estudiarlo para desarrollar un tratamiento. Luis es originario de Uruapan, Michoacán, y en su tiempo libres practica deportes como squash, ciclismo de montaña, volleyball y calistenia.
Tania Sepúlveda Morales (Undergraduate student. Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas, ENES Juriquilla, UNAM)
Tania was born and grew up in Morelia, Michoacán. She has finished her studies in the Undergraduate Program on Genomic Sciences at ENES Juriquilla, UNAM and is currently working on her thesis project. Some of her interests in human genomics are the understanding of diseases, the application of iPS cells and precision medicine. Outside the lab, her hobbies and interests span the arts such as cinema, music and the development of graphic design, and sports like volleyball and weight training.
Tania nació y creció en Morelia, Michoacán. Actualmente se encuentra trabajando en su proyecto de tésis habiendo terminado sus estudios dentro de la Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas (LCG) en la ENES Juriquilla de la UNAM. Algunos de sus mayores intereses en la genómica humana es el entendimiento de enfermedades, la aplicación de células iPS y la medicina de precisión. Fuera del laboratorio tiene intereses en las artes como el cine, música y la creación de diseño gráfico, y en deportes como el voleibol y entrenamiento con pesas.
Alison Diaz Cuevas (Undergraduate thesis student. Licenciatura en Biotecnología Genómica, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, UANL)
Alison was born in Jilotepec, State of México. She has finished her studies in Genomic Biotechnology at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) and is currently finishing her thesis. Alison discovered her passion for genetics and molecular biology during her participation in the XXVI National Biology Olympiad. She has focused her undergraduate studies in the areas of bioinformatics and NGS technologies used for the detection and study of rare diseases. Outside of her academic interests, Alison enjoys swimming, listening to music, hanging out with friends, and spending time with her pets.
Alison es originaria de Jilotepec, Estado de México. Actualmente se encuentra terminando su tésis habiéndose graduado de la Licenciatura en Biotecnología Genómica en la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL). Alison descubrió su pasión por la genética y la biología molecular a raíz de su participación en la XXVI Olimpiada Nacional de Biología. Durante sus estudios de licenciatura ha enfocando su interés en bioinformática y tecnologías de NGS para la detección y comprensión de enfermedades raras. Independiente al área escolar, Alison disfruta de practicar natación, escuchar música, salir con sus amigos y pasar tiempo con sus mascotas.
Issis Abril Pérez Alvarado (Biologist. Biological Sciences Master Program Student, UNAM)
Issis Abril is originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco. She has a B.Sc. in Biology by the University of Guadalajara (UdG). She is a second year Masters in Science student in the Biological Sciences Graduate Program of UNAM. She is mainly interested in cancer genomics and wants to understand how changes in the human genome are related to disease development, as well as its implications for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. During her spare time, she enjoys reading different literary genres, likes writing, both creative and for science communication, and gardening.
Issis Abril es originaria de Guadalajara, Jalisco. Ella es Licenciada en Biología por la Universidad de Guadalajara (UdG). Actualmente es estudiante del segundo año de Maestría en el programa de Posgrado en Ciencias Biológicas de la UNAM. Le interesa principalmente la genómica del cáncer, entender como cambios en el genoma humano se relacionan con el desarrollo de la enfermedad y sus implicaciones en la prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento. En su tiempo libre disfruta de varios géneros literarios, al igual que de la escritura tanto creativa como de divulgación científica y es aficionada a la jardinería.
Marlon Aldair Arciniega Sánchez (Undergraduate student. Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas, ENES Juriquilla, UNAM)
Marlon Aldair was born in the State of México, México. Currently, he is a fourth year student in the Genomic Sciences Undergraduate program at UNAM. His main research interests include genomic medicine and epigenetics and its relationship with expression and suppression of genes that leads to genetic diseases. He is also interested in the generation of treatments based on the application of sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools. Aside from his academic interests, he enjoys playing the violin, learning languages, and practicing sports such as taekwondo and volleyball.
Marlon Aldair es originario del Estado de México. Actualmente estudia el cuarto año de la Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas de la UNAM. Su principal interés yace en el área de la medicina genómica, específicamente en la epigenética y su relación con la expresión y supresión de genes causantes de enfermedades de origen genético. También le interesan la generación de tratamientos mediante la utilización de tecnologías de secuenciación y herramientas bioinformáticas. Dentro de sus intereses personales se encuentran tocar el violín, aprendizaje de idiomas y práctica de deportes como el taekwondo y vóleibol.
Pamela Denisse Meza Cruz (Undergraduate thesis student. Licenciatura en Biotecnología Genómica, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, UANL)
Pamela was born in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. She has finished her undergraduate studies on Genomic Biotechnology at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) and is currently working on her thesis project. Her interest in human genetics and the Mendelian Genomics and Precision Health Laboratory is due to the research that is currently carried out for molecular diagnosis of patients with rare diseases to achieve a more adequate treatment. In her spare time, Pamela enjoys painting, watching movies, exercising, and baking.
Pamela nació en Xalapa, Veracruz pero decidió realizar sus estudios universitarios en la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL), donde estudió la Licenciatura en Biotecnología Genómica. Actualmente se encuentra trabajando en su proyecto de tésis. Su interés por la genética humana y el Laboratorio de Genómica Mendeliana y Salud de Precisión se debe a la investigación que se realiza para el diagnóstico molecular de pacientes con enfermedades raras y lograr que de esa manera puedan tener un tratamiento adecuado. En su tiempo libre, Pamela disfruta pintar, ver películas, hacer ejercicio y la repostería.
César Enrique Calvo Aspiros (Undergraduate student. Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas, ENES Juriquilla, UNAM)
César is originally from Oaxaca where he completed an International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. He has finalized his studies at the Undergraduate Program in Genomic Sciences of UNAM and is currently working on his thesis project. Outside the laboratory, César is the international president and founder of a non-profit organization dedicated to scientific promotion under the name United Federation of Science. He also works collaboratively with young politicians on science public policy initiatives aimed at combating Mexico’s existing problems in this field. At various times throughout the year, Cesar visits high schools and universities to give his conference entitled “Science: The Last Frontier” in which he shares the history and potential of genomics for the future of the world.
César es originario de Oaxaca donde cursó el Programa de Diploma de la Organización del Bachillerato Internacional. Actualmente se encuentra trabajando en su proyecto de tésis, habiendo terminado sus cursos dentro de la Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas de la UNAM. Fuera del laboratorio, César es presidente internacional y fundador de una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a realizar promoción científica con el nombre de United Federation of Science. Asimismo, trabaja colaborativamente con jóvenes políticos en iniciativas de política pública de la ciencia con objetivo de combatir los problemas existentes que tiene México en este campo. En diversos momentos del año, César visita escuelas preparatorias y universidades para dar su conferencia titulada “Ciencia: La Última Frontera” en la cual comparte la historia y potencial de la genómica para el futuro del mundo.
José Luis Téllez Arreola (Postdoctoral researcher. Investigador Postdoctoral)
José Luis obtained his DVM from the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH). He obtained his M.Sc. in Neurobiology and Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the Institute of Neurobiology at UNAM. He has two post-doctorates abroad at the University of Utah and Northwestern University in Chicago. José Luis is a pioneer in Mexico studying the nervous system utilizing the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism. Outside the lab, he enjoys being with his family and doing outdoor activities such as camping and mountain biking. He is also a coffee lover.
José Luis es veterinario por la Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH). Obtuvo su maestría en neurobiología y su doctorado en ciencias biomédicas en el Instituto de Neurobiología de la UNAM. Tiene dos posdoctorados en el extranjero, en la Universidad de Utah y en la Universidad Northwestern de Chicago. José Luis es pionero en México en el estudio del sistema nervioso utilizando el nematodo Caenorhabditis elegans como modelo. Fuera del laboratorio, le gusta estar con la familia y las actividades al aire libre, como acampar y montar en bicicleta de montaña, y es un amante del café.
Valeria Gómez Vela (Undergraduate student. Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas, ENES Juriquilla, UNAM)
Valeria is an undergraduate student in her second year of the Genomic Sciences Undergraduate Program at UNAM. After studying medicine at the University of Guanajuato, she decided to pursue a degree in Genomic Sciences to better understand the molecular and genetic bases of human diseases. She is passionate about exploring the knowledge that can be gained from a sequenced genome and the therapeutic and diagnostic options that can be found for less studied diseases. In her free time, she really enjoys going to the gym, painting, reading, traveling, spending time with her family, and writing poetry.
Valeria es una estudiante cursando su segundo año de la Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas (LCG) de la UNAM. Tras estudiar medicina en la Universidad de Guanajuato, Valeria decidió ingresar a la LCG ya que su interés es comprender las bases moleculares y genéticas de las enfermedades. Le apasiona saber de qué manera se puede ir adquiriendo conocimiento a partir de un genoma secuenciado y explorar las opciones terapéuticas y diagnósticas que se les pueden ir dando a enfermedades menos estudiadas. Fuera del laboratorio, ella disfruta mucho ir al gimnasio, pintar, leer, viajar, pasar tiempo con su familia y escribir poesía.
