Xavier Soberón leads Mexico’s National Institute of Genomic Medicine. Originally a chemist, he has been interested in the chemical synthesis of DNA and its applications, but has recently focused on the genetic make-up of Latino and Mexican populations and the genomics of parasites and the microbiomes of respiratory disease. He has served as director of the National System of Researchers of Mexico and of the Institute of Biotechnology of the National University of Mexico.
